Star San Acid Sanitizer, 8 oz

  • Amylase enzyme – 1 lb

  • Use 1 tsp. Per 5 gallon batch

Star San is an acid based no rinse sanitizer. Use only one ounce per 5 gallons of water. Star San is odorless, flavorless, and requires only one to two minutes of contact time. This product does tend to foam, which has advantages and disadvantages. The foaming action helps to sanitize cracks and crevices, but you need to allow extra time for draining. The foaming action is perfect for plastic fermenters. You can minimize the foaming effect by adding Star San to the vessel after the water has been added, and by siphoning as opposed to pouring the solution between vessels. Since Star San is acid based, contact with soft metals should be kept to a minimum. Kept in a sealed container, a Star San solution will stay effective for as long as three

DON’T FEAR THE FOAM, September 28, 2012

I love this stuff. I use it to sanitize the living crap (literally) out of everything I need for brewing. John Palmer, in his excellent book, How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time, writes that the foam left over from sanitizing your carboy won’t affect the taste of the beer. He’s right! *sips on delicious homemade Irish red* Mmmthat’sgoodbeer.

According to an FAQ on Reddit from a Star San rep […]:

– Your solution should be used within an hour after mixing it up (I let mine go for my whole 3-6 hour brew day, no problems there)

– You should use the ratio specified on the label (very important)

– “the foam will not hurt or dis-flavor your product” (it is a no-rinse solution!)

So get some of this. Or a lot of this! Then go forth and brew!

I feared the foam, until I read up on this, January 31, 2013
By
E. Sikorski (South Jersey, NJ) –

I used this when I first started homebrewing, based off what I read in forums and in books. I must say that I didn’t like how bubbly and foamy the product got. When sanitizing bottles, it took a long time to let the bubbles dissipate. For sanitizing buckets and equipment, this worked fine. No off-flavors or any sanitation issues at all. I have switched to a “cleanitizer” (also a no-rinse) sold by Austin Homebrew and have loved that product for the past year and half. However, after reading reviews on Amazon and looking into it further, I will consider switching back to this product as the foam does not appear to harm the beer in any way. I always waited until it went away before bottling…but appearently there is no need. Thanks to other reviewers for your info. Check around amazon for a few different listings and sizes. There might be a better offer lurking somewhere further down the page!

Would recommend to anyone who needs to remove paint from glass, December 31, 2015

This review is from: Star San Sanitizer (Misc.)
I use this product to remove lettering from bottles that have the paint fired on. I re-purpose the bottles into bird feeders which are decorated so needed a way to remove permanent paint. This works amazingly well. I put 1 ounce in 5 gallons of water and let the painted bottles sit in it for 2 days. Permanent paint wipes right off. Fabulous product. Would recommend to anyone who needs to remove paint from glass.
